Endoscopic Sinus Surgery Brings Relief
Rajan Dang, MD, Washington University Ear, Nose and Throat Surgeon
Here’s good news for those suffering from sinus blockages — outpatient endoscopic sinus surgery at Christian Hospital may be the answer to relieve your pain, drainage, recurring infections, impaired breathing or loss of smell.
“This procedure is for anyone 18 years of age or older who experiences chronic nasal complaints like drainage or facial pressure,” notes Dr. Dang, who performs the outpatient procedure after first determining the best course of action for each patient. “This procedure is designed to improve the drainage of the sinuses and to improve airflow through the nose.”
Patients can self-refer to see Dr. Dang, who will first prescribe saltwater rinses and topical nasal sprays for one month, with or without antibiotics, followed by a CT scan if there is no improvement.
The goals of endoscopic sinus surgery include reducing the number and severity of sinus infections; improve symptoms associated with sinusitis, airflow through the nose and sense of smell; and access for nasal rinses to reach the sinus cavities for cleaning and medication delivery.
Sinus surgery is used to relieve symptoms associated with:
- Sinusitis and nasal polyps
- Nasal congestion
- Nasal obstruction
- Recurrent or chronic sinus infections
- Nasal tumors
