Breast Cancer
Christian Hospital offers the latest technology for the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer. Our oncologists and Washington University breast surgeons and plastic surgeons are experienced in all types of breast cancer and can provide a customized treatment plan for you.
If you notice any bumps, lumps or changes in your breast, see a medical professional to get screened for breast cancer right away. Most often, breast abnormalities aren’t cancerous. And if detected early, most forms of breast cancer can be cured.
The following are some common signs and symptoms of breast cancer:
- Hard knot or thickening of the breast
- Swelling and redness
- Change in breast size or shape
- Dimpling and puckering of the breast
- Itchy or scaly skin
- Bloody or clear nipple discharge
- New pain in breast
To screen for breast cancer, your physician will likely recommend a mammogram, though other imaging tests may be performed, such as a breast ultrasound or breast MRI.
If further testing is necessary, the physician may perform a biopsy to remove fluid or tissue from the breast to send to the lab to identify any cancerous cells. A biopsy is how our team will confirm if cancerous or abnormal cells are present.
The type of biopsy performed will depend on the location and size of the breast mass. Christian Hospital performs a variety of breast biopsy procedures, including:
- Fine needle aspiration biopsy
- Core needle biopsy
- Surgical biopsy
