At Christian Hospital, your successful recovery is our mission. Our comprehensive inpatient medical rehabilitation unit offers state-of-the-art, personalized care for patients in need of therapy after their hospital stay. This includes patients who have experienced stroke, brain injury, spinal cord injury, orthopedic conditions, amputations, neurological diseases, cardiac disease and medically complex conditions. The comprehensive medical rehabilitation (CMR) unit at Christian is one of a few of its kind in the region and one of the first inpatient rehabilitation units in the St. Louis area.

Diagnosis:
- Stroke
- Amputee
- Spinal cord injury

- Other neurological diseases (multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease)
- Deconditioning after prolonged/complicated hospital stay
- Cardiac disease
Admission criteria:
- Must have a treatable medical diagnosis or order for rehab
- Patient must be referred by their primary care physician or another medical professional to receive treatment and care into inpatient therapy
- 18 years of age or older
- Medically stable and able to tolerate three hours of therapy per day
- Require at least two skilled therapy services (PT, OT, SLP)
- Must have a successful discharge
- Willing to participate in therapy
- Potential to benefit from rehab
- Require 24/7 nursing care
- Preauthorization must be obtained (if required) from patient’s insurance plan prior to admission to the hospital

Our comprehensive medical rehabilitation team includes:
- A physical medicine and rehabilitation physiatrist, who is specifically trained in rehabilitation medicine, to oversee the rehab program and provide daily contact to patients
- Highly experienced nursing staff who provide 24-hour rehabilitation nursing, manage any medical issues and provide the most comprehensive medical care for each patient
- A social worker who evaluates patient needs, creates an individualized plan for discharge, ensures equipment, home services and all resources needed after discharge are in place, and assists patients and their family in their transition to home
- Our therapy services include physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech language pathology, respiratory therapy and recreational therapy
What do I need to bring:
- Comfortable pants, sweatpants or sweatsuit
- Shoes with good support and rubber soles
- Shirts with button fronts or pullovers that fit easily over your head
- Undergarments, pajamas or gown, robe
- Seasonal outerwear
- Toiletry items including toothbrush, toothpaste, comb and more (we provide those things if you’re unable to obtain them).
- Dentures, eyeglasses and hearing aids, if relevant
- CPAP/BiPap, if relevant
- Driver’s license or other proof of identification
- Medical insurance card
- Living will/advance directive
Planning your discharge
- Your case manager/social worker will meet with you and your family to coordinate your discharge and family training
- Your rehabilitation care team will meet weekly to review your progress. Following the team conference, your case manager will give you an update and continue to work with you to develop your discharge plan
- Any equipment you may need after discharge will be discussed with you prior to your discharge date
Discharge day
- During your stay, you and your family will receive training to help you feel safe and confident at your time of discharge
- Discharge time is not specific. Your case manager/social worker will work with you to coordinate a time
- You will receive written discharge instructions and prescriptions for your medications
What your stay will be like:
When you arrive, we will:
- Show you to your room and our unit
- Introduce you to our hospital staff
- Conduct a detailed assessment of your medical and rehabilitation needs
Daily meals
- Meals are available in your room or in our designated dining room.
- Breakfast is served at 6:30 a.m.
- Lunch is served at 11:45 a.m.
- Dinner is served at 4:45 p.m.
Moving around
- We are here to help you with many daily activities, but our goal is for you to become independent with these activities before you leave
- Ask for our help to move around. If needed, a walker or wheelchair can be brought to your room
Your daily therapy
- Your participation in therapy is essential to progressing toward your goal
- Therapy is a minimum of three hours per day, five days per week, or a total of 15 hours each week
- Your therapy schedule will be posted in your room
Your daily routine
- A rehabilitation physician will visit you Monday – Friday
- Nurses specializing in rehabilitation care for you 24 hours a day
- Normal visiting hours are 9 a.m. – 9 p.m., Monday – Sunday. You are allowed two visitors at a time
