Hyperbaric Medicine
At the Christian Hospital Wound Care and Hyperbarics Center, we use advanced technologies to provide our patients with the latest in wound treatment. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is one of the treatments available that helps the body heal wounds more quickly and efficiently. We are the only facility in North St. Louis County equipped with hyperbaric chambers to offer this advanced treatment.
The pressurized hyperbaric chamber allows patients to breathe pure oxygen. This healing oxygen is then carried to the body’s tissues through the bloodstream. The pure oxygen promotes and encourages healing in the injured areas.
Each HBOT treatment lasts about two hours. Our physicians, technicians and staff, who are specially-trained in hyperbaric medicine, monitor patients throughout the treatment. Up to 18 percent of wound care patients may require HBOT. Most patients receive between 30 and 40 treatments, though this varies for every patient.
Some of the conditions treated with HBOT include:
- Diabetic ulcers
- Soft tissue radionecrosis and osteoradionecrosis
- Osteomyelitis
- Skin grafts
- Actinomycosis
- Crush injuries
- Progressive necrotizing infections
- Acute peripheral arterial insufficiency
